It can be used with a variety of growing mediums such as clay pebbles, rock wool cubes, coco fibre, copito, soil, or PU foam. The product comes with a water pump but a timer is required. The system requires weekly replacement of water and air stones are recommended for adding oxygen to the roots. While silent in operation, the blue drippers do not seem to spread water over a large enough area, according to some reviewers.
